In the Malay culture and philosophy, it is believed that God rewards a woman who gives birth, with more health and beauty, provided it is done properly and correctly. As a result Malays have created a detailed approach to postpartum care.
In Malay society, immediately after giving birth the new mother undergoes a carefully structured regime known as "berpantang" (postpartum period), that lasts just over 6 weeks, 44 days to be precise.
It is a tradition that has been handed down from generation to generation, from mother to mother and is focused on restoring the physical and mental health of the mother.
It is recommended to follow the treatments immediately after childbirth to regain a beautiful figure and to avoid mother blues. The treatment programme can be tailored to meet the individual needs. Some of the treatments can also be self performed. All products available at Little Tots Store can be purchased separately. The postpartum care session includes:
1) Massage
It is believe to expel wind from the body, to loosen tight muscles and nerves and push the womb back to it’s pre pregnancy position. By massaging the breast area also will enhance milk flow, prevent block milk ducts. The massage session last about one to two hours.
The massage lady would come to your house in the morning, usually at 8 a.m and the session normally would ends at about 12 p.m. It is not just merely massage, postpartum massage has more to offer actually.
2) Bertungku (in modern spa it is call herbal ball hot compress)
In this case, it is a stone heated on the stove until piping hot or use steam pot, wrap in cloth together with some leafs (which have medical effect due to some herbs or so). Many new moms love this hot compress so much, as it is very soothing to ease all the muscle ache. The massage and hot compress is done alternate day during the 7 days course. You can purchase this Tungku at Little Tots Store.
3) Mandi Herba (Bathing in some herbs water):
The massage lady would boil the herbs to bath after the massage or hot compress session.
4) Tangas
We are not sure what is the appropriate english term, but it is like sauna except this only aim on your private part. Again, the massage lady will boil some herbs and the new mom will have to stand over the pot of piping hot herbs water. This can be quite yucky scene as the heat and steam makes you bleed more and you have to standby tissue and toilet roll. This is believe to be able to speed up the healing of the wound and tighten the private part.
5) Postpartum Belly Wrap (Bengkung)
Some herbs /cream is applied to the belly area and the belly area is then wrapped in a long piece of cloth from right under the breasts to below the hips using Postpartum belly Wrap (Bengkung Lilit) available at Little Tots Store. This can be quite uncomfortable, movement restricted, making toilet trip a hassle and makes you perspire like no tomorrow under hot weather. But the effect is superb. Almost immediately you can see the flabby belly tighten and waistline reappears. During the 7 days, you will need to hold your breath and get the massage lady to wrap tighter, and leave the Postpartum Belly Wrap (Bengkung) over night. After 7 days course, you can use & wrap your belly on your own using Postpartum Belly Wrap (Bengkung Tali) or Postpartum Belly Wrap (Bengkung Roda) available at Little Tots Store.
6) Apply Pilis on forehead
Herbs is applied on the forehead. The aim is to reduce body heat and dizziness and keep the head cool. The massage lady would also comb all your hair back and tie it very tightly in a bun. This is to help expel all the unwanted wind from the head.
